With a 47% layoff last week and as the numbers continue to drop, it’s no secret that the downfall of Myspace as the premiere destination for music discovery is in the horizon. So what does this mean for all the up-and-coming artists on the brink of discovery and the fans looking to add new songs to their iTunes library? With Myspace crumbling to ruins, where will they go to next? According to a recent Hypebot article, there are 3 alternatives to explore.
The article first recognizes Facebook as an obvious alternative. In addition to having ultimate reach on the web as the world’s largest social network at the moment, Facebook has also made the move to integrate more interactive music apps like RootMusic’s BandPage to help reel in music artists and fans. But even with its recent efforts to become more music-friendly, Facebook still falls short in easy music discovery, and has yet to see the traction early Myspace did. As the leading site in music consumption, Hypebot also examines Youtube as a top contender for replacing Myspace. But the fact that Youtube was originally created as a platform to share videos has pitted it in the same position as Facebook, in its inability promote easy music discovery. And finally, in the aftermath of the digital revolution, we find a third category of alternatives- music websites and services. Created to meet the growing needs of emerging artists and help connect them with fans, artist websites like uPlaya have also taken a lead position in the rat race to supersede Myspace. However, the wide array of music services offered on the web today has made it difficult for a single music site to arise on top and amass a community in size and influence as powerful as Myspace once accomplished.
Because it’s quite clear that each of these alternatives fall short in succeeding Myspace as the major music capital on the web, I wanted to turn to the people actually mixed up in the migration- the artists and fans. Where will you be making the move with your music as Myspace continues to desolate?
